Bio

My name is Philip Smith. I grew up in Western North Carolina and graduated from Pisgah High School, Canton, N.C. I am a 1992 graduate of East Carolina University where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. While at ECU, I performed with the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, Trombone Choir, Jazz 'Bones, and The ECU Marching Pirates. I began teaching in 1992 at Shaw Middle School, Wagram, N.C. with the Scotland County School System. While working in Scotland County, I was given the opportunity to work with the Scotland High School Marching Band. In 1997, I was hired as the band director at Swansboro High School. As the director at Swansboro High School, I enjoyed working with many outstanding students and parents in Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and the award winning Marching Pirates. We enjoyed performing at 3-4 School Concerts yearly, Eastern District Band Festival, many local functions, all of the home Varsity Football Games, Festival and Holiday Parades, many local marching band competitions, Disney World Parades, the All-Star Jazz Festival in Orlando, Fla., and the 2009 NYC Veteran's Day Parade. I am very fortunate to have awesome students and parents to work with here at Swansboro Middle School, as well. Our band students are learning and growing so much on a daily basis. We enjoy performing in 3 school concerts yearly. We look forward to participating in the Eastern District All-District Band Auditions/Clinic, Onslow All-County Band, and the Eastern District Band Festival. We enjoy great administrative, school, parental, and community support. It is my honor to see and work with each of my students daily. I enjoy watching my students become proficient and talented musicians. Most importantly, I enjoy watching my students develop self-discipline, responsibility, work ethic, high standards, and achieve ambitious goals.

I am very happily married to DeAnna Smith, we have a wonderful son, Brock. We also have two dogs, Tucker and Sasha, and a cat, Georgia. My hobbies include teaching band, playing trombone, camping, fishing, and boating. Our family is very important to all of us.
